Building foundations is the first priority, this is not a 'laundry list" but rather a step by step process by which we hope to grow and maintain the strength of our community. Whose job is it to do this? Who should MAKE it their job? Regardless, this is a plan of action, a starting point for discussion. The Michigan Film Office has a new plan for 2010 which incorporates many of these points, many more to go and you can help make it all happen!
- Create a foundation or non profit with the purpose of holding dollars from fundraising activities.
- Draft a comprehensive plan to seek funding for the film office – marketing, fundraising, festivals, lobbying.
- Draft a comprehensive plan to seek commercial work as well as long form television projects and to promote and market the State as a feature film location.
- Build and maintain the production infrastructure with a constant stream of projects– and develop a deep film crew labor pool. The labor pool should be deep and consist of those wishing to work on commercials, music videos, reality shows, TV programming and of course feature films.
- Overhaul the MFO website or link it to another - and offer more useful and timely information such as who has scouted Michigan, what the MFO is doing monthly and perhaps production news/ information for outside producers to view. (in process)
- Find funding to commission a study, which would detail all crafts and freelance labor for future census collection and economic impact data.
- Establish and maintain a research method regarding nationwide incentives offered…then develop incentives to entice producers to work in the State. (Target Advertising Agency Executives!)
- Develop a verified, updatable online resource guide, regularly maintained – including contact info for facilities, personnel and equipment…as well as a locations guide using examples of the kinds of locations available statewide. (In process!!)
- Develop and or set guidelines for using freelance location scouts to assist MFO’s marketing and filmmaker service efforts.
- Develop a method to incorporate the Michigan production community into Statewide marketing efforts.
- Develop an action plan to educate elected officials and others about the industry. (Create a speakers Bureau)
- Develop a plan to make certain that all cities and townships are knowledgeable about the industry, what to expect when contacted and permitting for shoots and who to call if they have questions.
